How to set up the keyword ranking report in Claude

You need a Search Console property your Google account can open, a free Porter account and Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise for Claude Dashboards. The whole setup takes about 8 minutes.

  1. Connect Google Search Console in Porter

Sign up free at Porter, open Data sources, pick Google Search Console and choose your property. The Search Console to Claude tutorial shows each click.

Porter's Select accounts window for Google Search Console with a demo account
Pick the Search Console sites Claude can read, then save.
  2. Add Porter to Claude

In Claude, go to Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste https://mcp.portermetrics.com/mcp and name it Porter Metrics. Click Continue, then sign in to Porter and allow access.

Claude's Add custom connector window with the name Porter Metrics and Porter's MCP URL filled in
In Claude: Customize, Connectors, Add custom connector, then paste Porter’s MCP URL

Every position comes from Search Console’s Performance report, not a rank tracker, so it reflects real searches. Porter reads 27 Search Console fields.

Top 5 keyword ranking KPIs to watch

Trailgear demo data · last 14 days vs the 14 before

  • Average Position14.61.2 better

Watch the direction, not one day. A falling number means your pages are moving up.

  • Queries in positions 1–313of top 100

Where most clicks go. Losing a keyword here costs more than anywhere else.

  • Queries in positions 4–1042+3

On page one but lower down. A better title can lift these fastest.

  • Queries in positions 11–2045+3

Just off page one. A content fix can push these onto it.

  • Clicks35,388+9.6%

The check on every ranking change: did moving up bring more visits?

How the numbers are calculated

Average position
Google’s average top position for your pages, weighted by impressions. Lower is better.
Position buckets
Queries counted by their average position for the period: 1–3, 4–10 or 11–20.
Position change
Previous position − current position, shown as “better” when the number drops.
Top 100 queries
Your 100 queries with the most clicks in the period.
Gainers and losers
The queries with the biggest position change against the previous period.

What makes this keyword ranking report different

What you get that a rank tracker or a Search Console export can’t give you.

  • See positions from real searches

Positions come from Search Console, so they reflect what people actually saw, not one simulated search.

  • Track every keyword you rank for

No keyword list to set up or pay for: the top 100 queries come from your own data.

  • Ask why a keyword moved

Ask Claude which page ranks for it and how its clicks changed, in the same chat.

  • Compare any two periods

The last 7 days against the 7 before, last month or the weeks around an update.

  • Send it on your logo

Publish it as a Porter dashboard and email it to a client on a set day.

  • Skip the CSV downloads

A refresh pulls the latest days Google has published.

What the report includes

  • KPI cards for average position, clicks, impressions and queries in positions 1–3, 4–10 and 11–20
  • A daily average position trend
  • Top 100 queries with their ranking page
  • Biggest gainers and losers
  • Position and clicks by device
  • Share by link, PDF and scheduled email once published in Porter
