How to connect Stripe to Claude

Porter’s Stripe connector for Claude takes 3 steps, with no code and no server to host. First create a restricted key in Stripe, then paste it into Porter. After that, add one MCP URL to Claude as a custom connector and ask. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard Claude uses to connect to tools such as Porter.

What you need before you start

  • You need a Stripe account where you can create restricted keys, as well as a free Porter account and any Claude plan. Every plan from Free to Enterprise can add custom connectors in Claude, Cowork and Claude Desktop, although Free allows one (Anthropic’s guide to custom connectors in Claude).
  1. Step 1: Create a read-only key and connect Porter

In the Stripe Dashboard, go to Developers, then API keys, and create a restricted key with Core and Billing at Read (Stripe’s guide to restricted API keys). Sign up free at Porter, pick Stripe as the source and paste the rk_live_ key, then pick Claude as the destination.

  2. Step 2: Add the connector to Claude

In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors. Choose + Add, then Add custom connector. Finally, name it Porter Metrics and paste this URL:

    MCP URL
    https://mcp.portermetrics.com/mcp
  3. Step 3: Ask Claude about Stripe

Sign in to Porter, then try:

    Prompt
Using my Stripe account, show MRR, Net new MRR and Active subscribers for the last day of each of the last 3 months, by Currency.

02Use cases and prompts

What you can ask Claude

Each use case comes with a prompt to copy, the fields it uses from the Stripe fields list and who it’s for. The prompts split amounts by Currency, because Porter keeps each currency as Stripe records it. They also read MRR on its last day, since MRR is a balance, not a sum.

Can Claude explain what moved my MRR this month?

You get the month-end MRR bridge from one prompt, not a subscription export rebuilt in a sheet before the board update.

Prompt
For each of the last 3 full months, show MRR and Active subscribers on the month's last day, plus the month's total New MRR, Expansion MRR, Contraction MRR, Churned MRR, Reactivation MRR and Net new MRR, by Currency. Explain the biggest change in two sentences.

Is my churn from cancellations or failed payments?

You know whether the next fix is card recovery or the cancellation flow before anyone builds a churn deck.

Prompt
For the last 8 weeks, show Voluntary churned MRR, Delinquent churned MRR, Voluntary churned subscribers and Delinquent churned subscribers by Week and Currency, then Subscriber churn rate, Revenue churn rate and Net revenue retention on the last day. Which kind of churn should we fix first?

Can Claude tell why my payments are failing?

You see which declines to chase with customers and which point at a Radar rule, instead of filtering the Payments list code by code.

Prompt
For the last 7 days, show Payments, Successful payments and Failed payments by Failure code and Card brand, and Payments by Outcome type. Compute the success rate from the totals and list the 3 failure codes to fix first.

Can Claude show where revenue went before the payout?

Month-end close starts from a reconciliation table, with open disputes and their deadlines listed, instead of a Balance report export and a pivot table.

Prompt
For the last 6 months, show Gross volume, Fees, Refunded amount, Disputed amount, Net revenue and Payouts by Month and year and Currency. Explain why Payouts differ from Net revenue each month.
Then ask
Prompt
List disputes still open with Disputed amount, Dispute reason and Evidence due by.

Can Claude tell if more Meta Ads spend brought more subscribers?

Budget talks start from cost per new subscriber in Stripe rather than the conversions Meta reports about itself.

Prompt
For the last 12 weeks, show Stripe New MRR and New subscribers by Week next to Meta Ads Amount spent by Week, then spend per new subscriber. Did weeks with more spend bring more subscribers?

03Why Porter

Why Porter for Stripe in Claude

Porter turns Stripe into answers your team can use, next to the rest of your marketing data. Need Claude to issue refunds or create payment links instead? Use Stripe’s official MCP, which can write with human confirmation. You can run both.

06Security

Is it safe?

Yes. Porter reads Stripe with a restricted key you create, set to Read on Core and Billing and None everywhere else. Your money, subscriptions and customers stay exactly as you set them. Before going live, test with a sandbox (test mode) key, and revoke the key in Stripe anytime.

What the connector needs from Stripe

Porter needs Read on Balance, Balance transaction sources, Charges and refunds, Customers, Disputes, Payouts, Products, Coupons, Invoices, Prices and Subscriptions. Porter rejects pk_ keys, while sk_live_ keys grant everything (Stripe's API key best practices).

Try the connector on a Stripe sandbox first

When an rk_test_ key connects a sandbox, Porter's Live mode field marks those rows 0.

07FAQ

FAQ

Finance and SaaS teams usually ask about sandboxes, currencies, trials, several accounts, Claude Code and freshness. After that come 3 fixes: numbers that don't match Stripe, a missing permission and long questions that run slow.

Can I try a Stripe sandbox (test mode) first?

Yes. Porter takes a restricted key from a Stripe sandbox, which starts with rk_test_ (Stripe's API key prefixes), so Claude answers on test data. When the numbers look right, connect a live rk_live_ key as its own account in Porter.

Does Porter convert currencies?

Porter keeps every Stripe amount in its own currency, so Claude shows one row per Currency and keeps dollars and euros apart. If you need one total, give Claude an exchange rate and it converts. Stripe's Billing analytics converts MRR to one currency, so its totals differ.

Can Claude track free-trial conversions?

Claude gets Trialing subscriptions, Trial conversions and Trial conversion rate, so you see how many trials turned into paid subscriptions and how fast. For the number of new trials started in a period, check Stripe's Billing analytics.

Can I connect several Stripe accounts or a Connect platform?

Yes. Each Stripe account connects with its own restricted key and bills as one account, so agencies add each client the same way. For a Connect platform, add each connected account with its own key, the same way.

Can I use Claude Code to build Stripe payments?

The Stripe connector gives Claude reports on the payments, subscriptions and payouts you already have. To build checkout or billing into an app, install Stripe's plugin for Claude Code and use both side by side. Porter's MCP servers for marketing data also list what else Claude can read.

How fresh is the Stripe data, and how far back does it go?

Porter reads Stripe live on every question, with no cache, so charges and payouts show as Stripe has them right now. Paid plans have no history cut-off, and 5 years have been tested. The free plan, however, reads 15 days in AI chats (30 days of history).

Troubleshooting

Why don't Claude's numbers match Stripe?

In short, Claude's Stripe numbers through Porter follow 3 clocks. Gross volume counts when money moves, payments when the charge is created (failed attempts too), and invoices when they're created. Dates use your Dashboard timezone, so UTC exports shift days. Billing analytics also applies your own MRR settings and currency conversion.

Why does Claude say a Stripe permission is missing?

Edit the restricted key in Stripe and add Read on the missing resource, with no need to reconnect. A 403 error means the key lacks Read on one Stripe resource. A 401 means the key was rolled or deleted, so paste a new one.

Why is a long Stripe question slow or incomplete?

Ask by month for long ranges. Porter fetches each question within Stripe's API rate limits, so long ranges on busy accounts take time. Balance transactions, invoices, payouts and MRR return 30 days in one call, while charges take longer. Monthly questions keep each pull inside the page cap.
