Porter Metrics gives Claude, ChatGPT and other AI clients one MCP server for your Shopify store. Ask about sales, then fix the catalog in the same chat. MCP is the Model Context Protocol, the open standard AI apps use to reach other tools. Every answer comes from your live store data.
Store management
Products: create new products as drafts, then edit title, description, price, SKU and status. Move up to 50 products at once.
Variants and images: create, update or delete variants, and add product images from a public link.
Collections: create and update collections, then add products to them.
Inventory: read stock per location and set a new count. Porter refuses the update if stock moved after it read the number.
Discount codes: percentage codes for chosen products, collections or customer segments.
Pages: create or update store pages, like a shipping policy or a size guide.
Reporting and analytics
150+ fields: every order, product, customer and sales field in the Shopify fields list, with the labels you see in the admin.
Net sales and profit: Net Sales, Gross Profit and Average order value by product, channel or day.
New vs repeat customers: Repeat Customers, Repeat Customers AOV and their share of net sales.
Discount codes that pay: orders, discounts and net sales for every Discount Code.
Live store analytics: sessions and conversion through ShopifyQL, the query language behind the admin reports (Shopify’s ShopifyQL reference).
Live dashboards and schedules: one link that stays current, plus weekly reports. Start from the free Shopify dashboard templates.
Orders and customers
Find orders: by status, date, email, tag, SKU or channel, up to 250 per page.
One order in full: line items, totals and tracking for a single order.
Customer lists: customers by tag, country, order count and total spent.
Order edits with a check: order edits, tags and draft orders run only after you confirm the exact change.
Email next to repeat buyers: flows and campaigns beside Repeat Customers, through the Klaviyo connector for Claude.
Several stores, one question: compare every store you run without switching logins.
Results where your team works: send the same numbers to Google Sheets, BigQuery or Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio).
Reference
Shopify MCP server reference
One MCP server: Porter connects Shopify to the AI clients, fields, metrics, dimensions and workflows store teams already use. The same server URL works in Claude, ChatGPT and any MCP client that supports remote servers. Porter reads through Shopify’s Admin API, so you never build a custom app or copy an access token.
The same Shopify connection also sends data to Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio), BigQuery and Google Sheets, at no extra cost.
Security and trust
Safety and security
Porter’s Shopify MCP starts read-only and asks before it changes anything in your store. Products start as drafts, stock updates check the count first, and money actions never leave the Shopify admin. An AI assistant working through Porter only reaches the parts of the store you approved in Shopify, and you can remove that access in one click.
Read-only first
Sales, orders, customers and analytics are reads. Asking about them changes nothing in your store.
Approval before every change
Claude shows you the exact change first: the product, the price, the count or the code. Porter writes to Shopify only after you say yes.
Drafts by default
New products are created as drafts, so shoppers never see a half-finished listing. Old products are archived instead of deleted, so you can bring them back.
Stock-safe inventory
Porter reads the current count before it sets a new one. If someone sold or restocked the item in between, the update stops and Claude asks again.
Money stays in the admin
Refunds, gift cards, staff accounts and your live theme stay out of reach. You handle those in Shopify as usual.
Porter works through Shopify’s Admin API. Nothing clicks around your admin in a browser session on your behalf.
Revoke access anytime
Uninstall the app from your Shopify admin and the connection stops working at once. You can reconnect later with the access level you choose.
Setup
How to set up the Shopify MCP server
Porter’s Shopify MCP uses the same server URL in every AI client, and each client has its own place to paste it. Claude takes it as a plugin or a custom connector. ChatGPT takes it through the Porter Metrics app or developer mode. Either way, you finish by approving the app in your Shopify admin.

Click Add → Add marketplace → Add from a repository.
Pasteportermetrics/porter.
Confirm Use portermetrics/porter.
Keep Sync automatically turned on.
Install the Porter Metrics card from the Directory.
Connect the Porter connector from the plugin settings.
Ask “Connect my Shopify store” and approve the app in your Shopify admin.
Sign in. Your browser opens: sign in with the Google account you use in Porter.
codex mcp login porter
Check:codex mcp list shows porter as logged in. Start codex. Ask: “Which Shopify accounts can you see?”
The same URL works in Windsurf, Cline, Zed and any client that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP.
Shopify’s own connector
Shopify also ships its own connectors for Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants (Shopify’s list of AI tool connectors). You install it from the AI client, not from the Shopify App Store, and approve it in your Shopify admin. Shopify’s integrations connect one store at a time.
Porter’s video installs Shopify’s own connector in Claude, then sets up Porter’s MCP next to it. It shows where each one fits: Shopify’s for one store, Porter’s for several stores and your ad data in one chat.
Your first question, in either client:
For my Shopify store, show Orders, Net Sales and Average order value by Week for the last 4 full weeks.
Prompts
Shopify MCP prompts
Each Shopify skill in Porter’s MCP is a ready-made prompt for one store job. Every skill turns live store data into a report, a diagnosis, a recommendation, an alert or a draft waiting for approval. Copy a prompt into Claude or ChatGPT, then change the dates, thresholds or collection names to match your store.
Reporting skills
Connection test
List my connected Shopify stores, then show Orders, Net Sales and Average order value by Week for the last 4 full weeks.
Product profit
Rank my products by Gross Profit for the last 30 days. Show Net Sales, COGS and Gross Profit for each, and flag products with no Unit Cost so I know which profits are overstated.
Repeat customers
Show New Customers and Repeat Customers by Month for the last 6 months, with New Customers AOV, Repeat Customers AOV and Repeat Customers Net Sales.
Discount code check
For the last 60 days, show Orders, Discounts and Net Sales by Discount Code. Rank codes by Net Sales and flag codes with high discounts but few orders.
Channel and source mix
Break down Net Sales and Orders for last month by Channel and UTM Source. Show each one’s share of Net Sales.
Store comparison
Compare every connected Shopify store by Orders, Net Sales, Average order value and Repeat Customers % for the last 30 days, worst first.
Conversion rate
Using ShopifyQL, show sessions and conversion rate by day for the last 14 days, and mark days where conversion fell below the 14-day average.
Research skills
Spend to sales
Put weekly Meta Ads and Google Ads spend next to Shopify total sales and New Customers for the last 12 weeks. Show cost per new customer by week.
Cohorts
Group customers by the month of their first order for the last 12 months. For each group, show how many came back for a second order and when.
Customer segments
List my top 50 customers by Customer Total Spent with Customer Orders Count, Customer Last Order Date and Customer Tags. Flag the ones who haven’t ordered in 90 days.
Store operations check
Show variants under 10 units in stock by location, orders still unfulfilled after 3 days, orders still unpaid, and the 10 products with the highest Returns this month.
The spend-to-sales skill blends Shopify with your ad accounts, so connect Meta Ads and Google Ads in Porter first.
Automation skills
Restock count
Read current stock for the Summer collection at every location. Propose new counts from the delivery list I paste next, then set them only after I approve.
Catalog cleanup
Find active products with no sales in the last 180 days. List them, then move them to draft after I approve, up to 50 at a time.
Launch a discount
Propose a 15% discount code for the Best sellers collection, valid this weekend. Show me the code and rules first, and create it only when I confirm.
Product from a brief
Create a draft product from the brief I paste next, with Small, Medium and Large variants and images from these links. Show me the draft before you save it.
Weekly alert
Every Monday, compare last week’s Net Sales, Average order value and Repeat Customers % with the week before. Send a three-line summary to Slack.
Who this is for
Who this is for
Porter’s Shopify MCP fits marketers who run a store and need sales, catalog and ad numbers in one conversation. Founders, agencies, paid media teams and marketing analysts use it to turn a store question into a report, a draft or an alert. Nobody exports a CSV.
Marketers who sell on Shopify and report on it.
Small-business founders and DTC marketers
Morning check: yesterday’s net sales, orders and AOV in one line before the first coffee.
Product profit: you see which products earn money, not only which ones sell.
Catalog edits: a price change or a new variant goes out as a draft you approve.
Discount decisions: you know which code brought new buyers before you run it again.
Agencies and freelancers
Every client store in one chat: one prompt answers for all of them, with the store as a column.
Client reports: a live link the client opens on Monday, already current.
Store audits: missing unit costs, stale products and slow stock surface in one pass.
Bulk catalog work: fifty products moved to draft in one approved step.
Paid media and growth marketers
Spend next to net sales: Meta and Google Ads spend sits beside what the store sold.
New customer cost: you see what each new buyer cost by week, not only ROAS.
Source mix: net sales by UTM Source and Channel, straight from the orders.
Launch checks: the discount code and the collection are ready before the campaign starts.
Marketing analysts
Field-level access: every order, product and customer field, so the number holds up in the meeting.
Cohorts: repeat purchase by first-order month without a pivot table.
Warehouse destinations: the same data lands in BigQuery as rows you can query.
Numbers that reconcile: you know why a total differs from the admin before anyone asks.
When to use Shopify’s own instead
One store, Shopify-only questions, and catalog edits. Shopify’s connector is free on Shopify’s side and enough for that job.
Comparison
Official Shopify connector vs. Porter
Shopify’s merchant connector works in Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants, with no extra Shopify fee. Shopify’s help page on its connector for Claude lists products, collections, inventory, orders, customers, discounts and analytics. Porter covers the same store and adds your marketing data, dashboards and skills.
Shopify’s connector hands your AI your store. Porter’s MCP hands it your store next to everything that brings buyers to it.
Both read orders, customers and store analytics. Both edit products, collections and inventory, and neither refunds orders. Here is where they part.

Shopify’s column follows Shopify’s help pages on its AI connectors (as of November 2026).
Use Shopify’s own if you run one store, ask only about Shopify and mostly edit the catalog. Everything under Only one side is what happens when the store is one channel among several.
Which Shopify MCP do you need?
“Shopify MCP” names several different servers. The job decides which one you want.
Shopify’s merchant connector: your own store inside Claude or ChatGPT, one store at a time.
Dev MCP and the AI Toolkit: for developers. The Shopify AI Toolkit gives coding tools Shopify’s docs and API schemas, not your store data.
UCP Catalog and Cart: for shopping agents that browse a store’s products. UCP replaced the older Storefront MCP, as Shopify’s Storefront MCP migration page explains.
Porter: your store next to your ads, email and analytics, in any MCP client.
And the third-party MCPs?
Plenty of them rank for this search, and they split three ways.
Action routers: they run one Shopify action at a time and add little analysis.
Open-source servers: free to download and yours to host. You keep the token and patch it when Shopify changes the API.
Read-only analytics servers: they answer questions and change nothing in the store.
Porter reads, analyzes and makes approved changes from one hosted server, starting on the free plan. Browse all marketing MCP servers Porter runs.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Shopify MCP?
Yes. Shopify ships its own connectors for Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants, and they work with one store at a time. Porter's Shopify MCP runs at https://mcp.portermetrics.com/mcp, connects several stores and puts your ad and email data next to them. Both use Shopify's Admin API.
What is the Shopify MCP server URL?
Porter's Shopify MCP server URL is https://mcp.portermetrics.com/mcp. Paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or another AI client as a custom connector, then ask the client to connect your store. Shopify's own connector has no URL to paste: you install it from the AI client's connector directory.
Is Shopify MCP free?
Porter includes its Shopify MCP in every plan, the free-forever plan too. The free plan connects unlimited stores, keeps up to 30 days of history (15 days in AI chats) and adds 100 automation credits a month. Shopify's own connector also has no extra Shopify fee.
What is the Shopify Dev MCP, and do I need it?
Shopify's Dev MCP connects AI coding tools to Shopify's developer docs and API schemas, and it runs on your own machine. Developers building apps and themes use it. You don't need it to ask about sales or edit products: that takes a merchant connector like Shopify's or Porter's.
How do I connect Claude to Shopify?
Install the Porter plugin from Claude Settings → Customize → Plugins with the portermetrics/porter marketplace. Connect the Porter connector, ask Claude to connect your Shopify store and approve the app in your Shopify admin. Use the manual custom connector only when Claude asks for one.
Can it refund or cancel orders?
No, and neither can Shopify's own connector. Refunds, cancellations, gift cards and staff accounts stay in the Shopify admin, where you handle them as usual. Porter reads orders, and it edits order tags or draft orders only after you confirm the exact change.
Can I connect several Shopify stores?
Yes. Each store connects to Porter as its own account, and Claude can query them together in one question with the store as a column. Agencies and brands with regional stores use one prompt for all of them. Shopify's own connectors switch between stores one at a time.
Why don't Claude's numbers match my Shopify admin?
Porter's Total Sales leaves out duties and fees, and date presets like "last 7 days" end yesterday. Porter also sums every sales channel, and multi-currency stores can differ by currency. Average order value uses the same definition as Shopify, so compare like with like. MCP is the Model Context Protocol, the open standard behind both connectors.
