08FAQFAQ
Most questions cover Claude, freshness, several tabs, API keys and sending data the other way. Then come 3 fixes: tabs ChatGPT can't see, numbers that don't match, and slow or cut-off answers.
Can I use Porter in Claude too?
Yes. Porter's MCP URL, the same one behind the Google Sheets connector for ChatGPT, also works in Claude as a custom connector, with the same Porter account and tabs. See Porter's Google Sheets connector for Claude for the Claude setup and what it covers.
How fresh is the data, and what if I add a column?
Range reads come from the Sheets API the moment ChatGPT asks, so they show the sheet as it is. For a new column, ingest the tab again in Porter. Until then, ChatGPT reads the new column through a range.
Can I connect several spreadsheets or client tabs?
Yes. Every tab you connect in Porter becomes its own data source, from any number of spreadsheets. ChatGPT can then ask across them in one question. Agencies usually connect one tab per client with matching headers, then ask for one scorecard.
Do I need an OpenAI API key?
No. The Google Sheets connector for ChatGPT is a custom MCP server you add with one URL. So there's no OpenAI API key to paste into a spreadsheet and no code to run. If you're coding your own agent, point it at Google's official Sheets MCP instead.
Can Porter send ad data into Sheets instead?
Yes. Porter also works the other way: it can send marketing data into Google Sheets and keep a tab updated on a schedule. That's a separate setup, but both can run on the same spreadsheet.
Troubleshooting
Why can't ChatGPT see my tab or its columns?
Connect the tab itself in Porter, not just the spreadsheet, and keep its headers in row 1. The connecting Google account must also be able to open the file. A tab nobody has ingested has no fields yet, but ChatGPT can still read its range.
Why don't the numbers match my sheet?
ChatGPT's numbers through Porter can differ from your sheet for 5 usual reasons. For example, dates come back as text like 20261011, numbers as text like 73.0, and a renamed header breaks the old field name. Rows past the row limit are also left out, while a tab without a Date column can't be filtered by date.
Why is a big question slow or cut off?
Porter returns up to 1,000 rows per question by default, then flags anything longer as truncated. Google also caps reads at 60 per minute per user and times out requests after 180 seconds (Google's Sheets API usage limits). Instead, ask by month, or name a smaller range.
